4. Linebacker

The Saints linebacking corps actually took a step forward this past year after making some additions last offseason. But there isn’t a major difference maker in this group or a true face of the defense on the second level. It was overlooked to some degree, but New Orleans’ run defense was a pretty big problem last year as well. It would help to repair this weakness by adding a big power player at defensive tackle as well as looking to improve on the second level.

Jonathan Freeny, Gerald Hodges and Michael Mauti didn’t contribute much last year, but all three have expiring contracts. Hau’oli Kikaha is listed as a linebacker, but he is more of an edge type of player and clearly much better going forward than playing in reverse or in space. That basically leaves Manti Te’o, AJ Klein, and Craig Robertson.

Even though these aren’t generally considered big producers, this is a somewhat solid group overall. Still, one big addition, preferably a linebacker than can really run, would have extremely positive ramifications and a highly desirable trickle down affect. Anzalone, who has an extensive injury history, and Klein did finish the season on injured reserve.
