Tampa Bay Rays: Mark Reynolds
It’s hard to tell whether or not the Rays are heading for a full rebuilding effort or are just ahead of the curve when it comes to gauging the value of their own players. Waiving Corey Dickerson to add C.J. Cron was a move that came out of nowhere, and the returns for Steven Souza and Jake Odorizzi look modest. The fact remains that the Rays were in position to make the playoffs last year until their offense went belly-up in the second half.
With young pitching studs ready to make their full-season debuts and stick in the big leagues, the Rays still have that scrappy, underdog feel. Until Chris Archer is moved, the Rays are not fully punting on 2018.
The Rays aren’t going to be able to build a perfect lineup, and there’s no longer a way for small-market teams to gain an inside lane by being better at finding undervalued skills. Power is the only thing going for bargain prices these days, and the Rays employed one of the better one-trick hitters in the league last year in Logan Morrison.
With Morrison signing with the Twins, the Rays can mine another cheap source of power in veteran first baseman/DH Mark Reynolds, who should have interest in signing with an AL team where he can see more regular playing time. The Rays need power, and Reynolds has it in spades.
