9. Maia and Alex Shibutani capture Ice Dance Bronze and three teams prove U.S. Ice Dancing is strong

The ‘Shib Sibs’ skated cleanly throughout the ice dance event and exhibited grace and precision in their free skate to Coldplay to clinch the bronze. It was the second bronze for the dynamic team from the U.S.A., who also finished third in the team event as well.

Another American team, Madison Hubbell and Zachary Donohue, finished just shy of the podium in fourth place, after a minor flub marred an almost perfect skate. They were close to the Shibutanis throughout the event, coming close to achieving the bronze.

If the third team, Madison Chock and Evan Bates, hadn’t suffered a horrific fall in their free skate, there’s a chance they could have finished much higher than the ninth place they ended up at.

Still, with three such strong teams from the U.S.A., skating so close to the top scores in this event, Team U.S.A. proved that ice dancing is a major strength for the country and has advanced much higher than the ladies declining program.

“It’s great for us and it’s great for Team USA,” Maia Shibutani said afterwards to CBS.

“I think it was a balancing act for us, being really emotional and full of gratitude, but also staying focused and doing our job. It was an incredible experience and I can’t wait to get back on the ice tomorrow; we’re really proud of what we were able to do,” said Hubell according to Yahoo.
