Josh Allen – The Wildcard

Is there a more polarizing prospect at the NFL Combine this year than Wyoming quarterback Josh Allen? There is a sizeable gap between what NFL Draft experts like Mel Kiper and Mike Mayock think of him vs. what Twitter scouts think of the big-armed signal-caller.

Kiper has Allen going first overall in his mock draft while Mayock has Allen as his No. 2 quarterback prospect behind Darnold. Meanwhile, armchair scouts think Allen should be asked if he’ll be switching positions to tight end after a disappointing junior season at Wyoming.

It’s true, Allen had a disappointing junior season after opening eyes as a sophomore. Allen missed time with injury and struggled to complete slightly more than half his passes. That’s damning for a quarterback prospect no matter how far and hard he can throw the ball, accuracy is the most important trait for a quarterback.

While the 6-5, 237-pound Allen certainly looks the part and has the massive 10 1/8 inch mitts that teams want in a quarterback, Allen has to show that he’s got a changeup in his arsenal and he isn’t so reliant on his fastball. Luckily for him, he won’t be throwing against a defense and he won’t have to fit the ball in tight windows, so I think Allen is going to have a studly performance whirling the ball around the field.
