When teammate Hank Gathers collapsed on the court during the WCC Tournament quarterfinal and was rushed to the hospital, Bo Kimble was forced to move forward with a heavy heart. In fact, the entire Loyola Marymount squad in 1989-90 was heartbroken.

Gathers was pronounced dead at the hospital shortly after and Kimble lost his best friend. How does a team even move forward after that? Losing a 23-year-old star to an apparent heart condition in shocking fashion isn’t easy to overcome, but Loyola Marymount made the NCAA Tournament and an improbable run to the Elite Eight.

Loyola Marymount was granted a No. 11 seed after winning the regular season title and they went on to take down No. 6 New Mexico State, then Michigan and then Alabama to reach the Elite Eight.

The second-team All-American Kimble led the Lions with 35.8 points, 10.5 rebounds and 3.0 steals per game in the Elite Eight run, scoring over 40 points twice. He became even more of a hero when he shot his first free throws of the tournament left-handed in honor of Gathers who tried so hard to improve his left hand.
