Eddie Vedder was at the Oscars because he’s the coolest person left from the 90s.

Everyone likes to toss around the phrase ‘national treasure’ when talking about someone they like. It sort of loses a bit of its muster when we just throw it at anything funny we see and need to come up with a hip way to describe it. We need that phrase to pack a punch, so when there comes an opportunity to really use it, the punch is felt.

Like, for instance, when Pearl Jam singer Eddie Vedder randomly pops up in the background of an Oscars B-Roll shot of Meryl Streep.

Vedder is the elder statesman of the 90s grunge movement and is quickly becoming the only good thing left standing from that decade.

He’s a living, breathing easter egg always randomly popping up in the background when happy things are happening. When the Cubs were journeying to their first World Series in over 100 years, Vedder was in most shots behind home plate. Now he’s randomly seated behind Meryl Streep when the Oscars telecast cuts to and praises her work.

Basically, if you see Eddie Vedder you know something good is about to happen.

As it turns out, Vedder is on the schedule to perform at the Oscars this year during the ‘In Memoriam’ segment of the show. He performed Tom Petty’s “Room At The Top” to honor those we lost this year.

Before that, though, we had a happier moment when Vedder couldn’t help but be in awe of Meryl Streep.

This is also a testament to Vedder’s career. The lead singer of Poison wasn’t trotting out on stage at the Oscars to be a part of Hollywood’s biggest night. Vedder, who has always been as bombastically shy as the lead singer of a rock band can be, pops up everywhere for a reason. He has left such a positive impression on everyone he’s met.

If there’s a life lesson to learn from music, living your life more like Eddie Vedder is certainly way up there.
