Fifth Round

In the fifth round of the 2018 NFL Draft, it would make sense for head coach Sean McDermott to land a few developmental projects in the secondary. This is the position group he specializes in coaching. The first player he could take at No. 156 in the fifth round could be Clemson Tigers safety Van Smith.

Smith is 5-foot-11, 185 pounds, having played the last three years for three-time ACC Champion Clemson. He saw the field a bunch the last two years. Smith registered 164 total tackles (107 solo, 57 assists), 8.0 for a loss of yardage, had four interceptions for 165 yards, three passes defended, three forced fumbles and one fumble recovery. He feels like a prime candidate that McDermott could coach up in his Buffalo secondary at safety.

Buffalo will have satisfied its seven major draft needs by the time it picks at No. 166. The Bills should have a quarterback, a wide receiver, a defensive lineman, a safety, two guards and a tackle by then. So why not double-down on another defensive back in the fifth round in Boston College Eagles cornerback Isaac Yiadom?

Yiadom is 6-foot-1, 190 pounds. He played all four years for the Eagles, recording 110 tackles (75 solo, 35 assists), 22 pass breakups, three interceptions, three tackles for a loss of yardage and a forced fumble. Though he played sparingly as an underclassmen, Yiadom showed solid ball skills and a willingness to tackle in his junior and senior years in Chestnut Hill.

*Buffalo does not have picks in either the sixth or seventh round of the 2018 NFL Draft.
