5 potential replacements for Kevin Ollie at UConn
2. Tom Crean
Until further notice, Crean will be mentioned for any notable job that comes open. UConn is obviously on that list now, but they have to get in line behind Georgia as they move to replace Mark Fox. Multiple reports have already mentioned Crean as a candidate at Georgia, with Mike DeCourcy of Sporting News going so far as to report the former Indiana coach would be interested in that job.
Crean rebuilt the Indiana program from the ashes Kelvin Sampson left behind, going from 6-25 in his first season (2008-09) to four NCAA Tournament bids, two Big Ten regular season titles and 27 or more wins three times over a five season span from 2011-12 to 2015-16. But an 18-16 record in 2016-17, with a first-round loss in the NIT, got Crean fired.
Crean surely wants to get back into coaching after a year out as an ESPN analyst. He’ll have his pick of jobs, be it Georgia, Ole Miss, Pitt (where he was an assistant for one season in the mid-90s) or elsewhere, but UConn has to throw its hat in the ring if it hasn’t already.
