2018 NFL Draft: San Francisco 49ers 7-round mock
By Conor Dorney
Now that the Niners have their long-term quarterback situation figured out, a focus of this draft will be surrounding him with talent on the offensive side of the ball. The 49ers struggled on the interior of the offensive line in 2017 and Nevada’s Austin Corbett is one prospect who could come in and help to open things up for the San Francisco running game.
Corbett was a four-year starter for the Wolfpack and played primarily at left tackle, something that will make his transition a bit easier to the pro game, where he’s expected to move inside to guard. He flashes good technique and a bit of a nasty streak despite not being the most powerful guy in the world.
Talent evaluators have continuously raved about the strength of this class on the interior offensive line and even though this spot may be a bit high for Corbett’s actual value, this may be where San Francisco needs to take him to secure his services. General manager John Lynch seems to like guys who play with a chip on their shoulder and as a former walk-on, Corbett certainly fits that mold.
The Niners will need to establish a consistent run game if they want Jimmy Garoppolo to enjoy as much success as he did last season, and drafting Corbett to man the interior of the line will help in that regard for 2018 and beyond.
