College football 2018 spring guide: Biggest questions, storylines, players and coaches in the spotlight
Big Ten
Player to watch: Dwayne Haskins, Ohio State, quarterback
The redshirt sophomore saw spot duty last season in relief of J.T. Barrett, attempting 57 passes and throwing four touchdowns. He’s expected to win the job over Tate Martell and Joe Burrow. There were times last season when some impatient Buckeye fans wanted to see what he could do in this offense when they were suffering from Barrett fatigue. Ohio State is talented up and down the roster but needs Haskins to develop into a star to win the Big Ten.
Coach in the spotlight: Scott Frost, Nebraska
After leading UCF to an undefeated record and a Peach Bowl win over Auburn, Frost returns to his alma mater to resurrect the once-proud Nebraska football program. I think he’s going to do it too, but it may take a year or two. Nevertheless, the excitement is already sky-high as the spring game sold out in about 10 minutes.
Biggest question: Will Shea Patterson be eligible for Michigan?
Not just the biggest question in the Big Ten, but one of the biggest national stories in college football this spring is the fate of Shea Patterson. The former top quarterback recruit and Ole Miss transfer is waiting to hear if the NCAA will give him clearance to play in 2018. If he’s eligible, Michigan is a legit contender to win the Big Ten. If he’s not eligible, Michigan has to turn back to Brandon Peters or redshirt freshman Dylan McCaffrey, Christian’s younger brother.
