Winners and losers from spring training 2018
Winner: Miguel Cabrera
There were many questions last season about the status of Miguel Cabrera. Was the once in a generation player finally finished?
Cabrera posted a lukewarm .249 batting average last year with just 17 homers, and it appeared that the former Triple Crown winner was on a steep downhill decline.
Well, Miggy silenced those critics rather quickly with a monstrous spring training.
Cabrera hit .368 with three homers and 13 RBI’s, and suddenly, every pitcher in the American League Central is shaking in their boots.
Although the Tigers are expected to be quite bad this season, Cabrera himself admitted that he doesn’t even know some of his teammate’s name, he could play his way off the Tigers and in the hands of a contender.
I heard one of the top contenders in baseball just lost their injury-riddled first baseman to yet another foot injury. That could be interesting.
The Detroit Tigers may be getting a call from Brian Cashman sooner rather than later, which leads us to our next loser.
Loser: Greg Bird
Greg Bird just can’t catch a break.
The Yankees slugger went under the knife for yet another surgery on his foot. Bird missed 114 games last year due to a foot injury and missed the entire season in 2016 due to a shoulder injury.
Bird seems to be doing his best Nick Johnson impersonation.
He possesses a scary amount of talent, as displayed in last years postseason, however, for that talent to be utilized, you must stay on the field.

The timetable for Greg Bird’s return is 6-8 weeks, which would put him on par to return in mid May-early June.
However, if this present injury is anything like last years, the Yankees better find a suitable replacement for Bird, and quickly.
