Round 3 – Pick 66

Rashaad Penny, RB, San Diego State

Another way to keep a quarterback healthy and on the field is to give him a top flight running back to hand the ball off. If the Giants can fix some of their offensive line woes, they can finally get a strong running game going. The team relied heavily on Orleans Darkwa last season. Rookie Wayne Gallman showed some flashes as well. However, this team does not have a bell-cow back on the roster.

That would change with the selection of Rashaad Penny of San Diego State. The Heisman finalist and nation’s leading rusher is starting to feel like a forgotten man in an extremely deep running back class. His lone season as the featured back for the Aztecs showed how productive he can be. He also fits what new coach Pat Schurmur likes in his running back.

Penny is a bigger back at 5-foot-11 and 220 pounds. His 4.46 40 yard dash at the combine in Indianapolis showed that he has the ability to run away from guys as well. His best trait is his patience and ability to make people miss in tight quarters. Penny runs with great power and leaves almost no yards on the field. He is the type of back that is always falling forward. He could be the piece that compliments Manning and the Giants weapons outside.
