SS, High-End Spend

Corey Seager, $3,800

.370/.379/.519 with 1 HR in 27 at-bats

The young shortstop is probably somewhere between a high-end spend and a mid-range option today, but he’s hit Giants starter Johnny Cueto pretty well. Most of his power came against righties last year and he’s going to be leaned on heavily while third baseman Justin Turner is out. Seager smashed four-seam fastballs last year, which Cueto threw almost 34 percent of the time in 2017. Still only 23 years old, Seager could be in line for a massive season. His price is reasonable in a solid matchup.

Secondary Option – Trea Turner, $4,700(preferred for  the all day slate)

Mid-Range

Addison Russell, $3,100

0 at-bats vs. Caleb Smith

The price isn’t bad at all for the Chicago shortstop today. Russell has fairly significant splits when he faces a lefty on the mound and should be able to find himself in a good spot in the batting order. He had an .821 OPS last season vs. southpaws and he sets up well against what Smith throws also. Russell did very well against four-seamers and Smith throws that nearly 50 percent of the time. He also throws a change and a slider. Russell isn’t the best with the slider but just below average with the change. The park isn’t friendly but that didn’t stop the Cubs from putting up eight runs yesterday.

Secondary Option – Trevor Story, $3,000

Value

There’s really not much to pick from in the value range at this spot. The only player that sort of fits the bill is Freddy Galvis ($2,300) of the San Diego Padres. He’s fairly decent against righties and Chacin isn’t the worst matchup at all. I’m definitely leaning towards paying up at this position and finding good value elsewhere.
