Shortstop, High-End Spend

Main Slate

Xander Bogaerts, $3,700

.000/.000/.000 in 1 at-bat

The Boston shortstop has started off the season on an absolute tear, accumulating at least two extra base hits in each game so far. It’s probably worth noting that he played through a hand injury last year and that may have contributed to his poor showing. He didn’t really miss any time but he clearly wasn’t 100 percent. His hot streak does have to end at some point but it might be worth it to find out if he produces again today.

All Day

Carlos Correa, $4,000

0 at-bats vs. Mike Minor

Trea Turner($4,600) is a fine option but Correa is coming off a massive effort on Saturday and now gets to feast on another lefty. He’s just too good of a player to leave out, especially when he’s significantly cheaper than the most expensive option at his position. He had an OPS over 1.000 in 2017 vs. southpaws. The only reason to fade him is if you believe he won’t put two big games together back-to-back.

Mid-Range

Main Slate

Paul DeJong, $2,700

1.000/1.000/2.500 with 1 HR in 2 at-bats

It’s almost a literal copy and paste analysis for DeJong as it was for Jose Martinez- the young shortstop for the Redbirds hits lefties pretty well in limited action and represents a nice savings at the position. The Cardinals have gotten beat both games so far and will want to find their first win of the year. DeJong can help them do it in New York.

All Day

Jean Segura, $2,600

.000/.000/.000 in 3 at-bats

This may not be the best play ever as Segura has a lower OPS against righties. His batting average is still high and if he gets on base, he can steal a base at any time. Trevor Bauer is a good pitcher and many think he could have a breakout season. It’s still not the worst matchup and Segura doesn’t need to hit a home run to pay off. His price will normally be over $3,000 the rest of the way.

Value

Main Slate

Some players will look at Tim Anderson ($2,600) and see his ridiculous points per game and price point and play him. Could he pay off? Sure. It’s very important to stress that he has a career .675 OPS against righties, even ones as bad as Jason Hammel. I’ll save Anderson for a day when he’s facing a lefty, personally.

All Day

It’s the same song and dance on this slate. It’s very difficult to punt this spot because there’s a high probability to take a zero or a three spot from shortstop. That likely won’t get the job done.
