WWE WrestleMania: What every main event should have been
By Luke Norris
WrestleMania XXVI
Actual main event: Shawn Michaels vs. The Undertaker
What the main event should have been: John Cena vs. Edge
The Shawn Michaels-Undertaker saga continued at WrestleMania XXVI as the main event, and yes, it was the best match of the night. However, this one should not have been the main event. You know my stance here. With no title on the line, I don’t think that they should close the show. Ric Flair’s retirement match didn’t close the show. So why did Shawn Michaels get that treatment? I’m not saying he didn’t deserve it, but this wasn’t a title match.
If you want to put a title on ‘Taker and go with a title/streak vs. career type of thing, I’ve got no problem with that. It takes away from the build for this match but there’s still ways to make that happen. But had they put ‘Taker vs. HBK in about the same place that Michaels vs. Flair was, I would have been fine with that.
So my pick for the WrestleMania XXVI main event would have been John Cena vs. Edge for the WWE Championship. Both were actually title challengers at this event as Edge unsuccessfully challenged Chris Jericho for the World Heavyweight Championship and Cena beat Batista for the WWE Championship.
Both matches were entertaining enough, but as I felt with Kurt Angle and Triple H, I think that Cena and Edge always needed a one-on-one match for the title at a WrestleMania. The two were involved the year before in a Triple Threat with Big Show, but that wasn’t overly spectacular. Cena and Edge always delivered in the ring, and the storytelling was always done very well. A main event at WrestleMania would have added to that legacy and would have been the right call here.
