4. Mike Foltynewicz, SP, Atlanta Braves

Foltynewicz struck out eight with two walks while allowing one run on four hits over 5.1 innings against the Washington Nationals on Wednesday. Through two starts this season he has a 2.61 ERA and a 15:3 K/BB ratio over 10.1 innings.

Injuries have hampered Foltynewicz to this point in his career, and he wasn’t great over 29 appearances (154 innings-28 starts) for the Braves last year (10-13, 4.79 ERA). But his K/9 rate was good last year (8.4), and he can touch 98 MPH with his fastball. Control is still a bit of a thing (3.4 BB/9 in 2017), but the small sample returns this year are promising in that department (1.8 BB/9).

Foltynewicz will get the Nationals again in his next start, then the Chicago Cubs after that in a two-start week next week. So he ‘s not immediate plug-and-play material, outside of NL-only leagues perhaps. But looking with a longer view there is nice mixed-league potential here, and pitching is always worth getting ahead of the curve on.
