FanDuel Lineup and Picks for Thursday, April 5th
Shortstop, High End Spend
Early
Xander Bogaerts, $3,400
Everything that was said earlier about the Rays pitching situation applies here again. He’s understandably cooled off a bit from his blistering start, but Bogaerts is an excellent player and he should be able to rack up some points today without much issue. He certainly feels safe as far as his floor goes.
Late
Didi Gregorius, $4,000
.250/.250/.563 with 1 HR in 16 at-bats
Everything you just read about Andrew Cashner for the Brandon Drury analysis holds true right here as well(and later). About my only beef with Gregorius is his price is still very inflated after his monstrosity of a day on Tuesday, with over 70 FanDuel points. $4,000 is likely a little too much to spend given some of the other bats at your disposal. It’s more of a GPP play.
Mid-Range
Early
Jean Segura, $3,100
.333/.333/.667 with 1 HR in 9 at-bats
The speedy shortstop makes our list again because frankly, Kyle Gibson just isn’t that good as a major league pitcher. Segura has been playing very well to start the season and draws a favorable matchup. He’s averaging over 10 FanDuel points a game and he hasn’t shown off one of his greatest assets yet, which is stolen bases. His upside is huge today and he should be able to get on base at least once against Gibson. He has more power vs. righty pitchers as an added bonus.
Late
There’s nobody in that mid-tier that really looks too special. It’s never a surprise if Manny Machado has a good game, but he’s terrible in his career against Tanaka with a .174 average and a .600 OPS. It’s likely either spending up or punting at this spot.
Value
Early
Trevor Story, $2,700
0 at-bats vs. Joey Lucchesi
Playing Trevor Story on a repeated basis is asking to take a goose egg in your lineup. He’s far from a consistent hitter but he’s always going to be worth a look against a lefty. He’s crushed them in his career with a .992 OPS and a .402 wOBA. I can’t say I’ll definitely land on Story for a second night, but he’s at least in the conversation.
Late
Ketel Marte, $2,300
.000/.000/.000 with 0 HR in 1 at-bat
This is how little I regard Adam Wainwright in the twilight of his career. Marte is on the better side of his plaits and should do just enough to make it worth playing him. Truthfully, it’s about playing him and a big bat to make it worth your while. We’re just about to dive into some of the best bats on the slate not wearing Chicago Cubs uniforms.
