Shortstop, High End Spend

Manny Machado, $3,800

.353/.389/.647 with 3 HR in 51 at-bats

Batter vs. pitcher can be a tool and once the sample size reaches over 50 at-bats, it has to start to carry some weight with it. Machado has flat out owned veteran CC Sabathia in their encounters and they’re facing off in a launching pad. Macahdo is the only high end shortstop that is under $4,000 and needs to be on your radar for today.

In Consideration – Truthfully, all three of the shortstops that cost more than Machado are in play if you’re stacking a certain offense. That’s likely the only way I would pay up for one of them if I was building a team-specific stack. It’s a very tough choice today but for just a regular lineup build, I’d stick with the one-off of Machado.

Mid-Range

Corey Seager, $3,100

0 at-bats vs. Derek Holland

Typically, Seager is better against right-handed pitchers. We’re making a bit of an exception here for a couple reasons. First, Derek Holland is truly that bad. Second, the price tag on Seager is about as low as we’ll see all season. He’s got a fine matchup and could very well be worth his price. It’s also not like Seager is terrible against lefties. He hits them at a .283 clip with a .807 OPS and a .346 wOBA.

In Consideration – Dansby Swanson, $2,700

The promising young shortstop has started off his second year much better than the first one. He’s hitting over.300 and while he’s yet to leave the yard, what better place than Coors Field to get  knock that accomplishment down? Swanson is the cheapest everyday player from this entire game and can’t be ignored while he’s at this price.

Value

Aledmys Diaz, $2,700

.000/.000/.000 with 0 HR in 6 at-bats

One of the only other options at the shortstop position is Diaz, if he’s healthy. He has reverse splits so he’s not typically a play against lefties. However, he’s started off the season batting over .300 with a couple homers. Another factor working in his favor is he’s listed as day-today on FanDuel. Most players typically stays away from players with that tag due to fear they’ll leave the game.
