Round 3 – Pick 79

Nick Nelson, CB, Wisconsin

The first two draft picks for this team were on offense at the game’s two most important positions. On the defensive side of the ball, there is much more talent in Arizona. Patrick Peterson is one of the game’s best at the corner positon. They also boast a pair of imposing pass rushers. In terms of importance, key areas are locked down for this team. However, opposite Peterson there is a hole at the other corner spot.

Nick Nelson of Wisconsin is an underrated prospect in a deep corner class. Nelson is a former Hawaii player who transferred to Madison to play with the Badgers. From a production stand point, despite the competition level increasing, Nelson remained a play maker. He did not log a single interception as a Badger but was tied for third in the country in pass break-ups. That rare level of break-ups to interceptions show that he has ball skills, but may not be a finisher.

His biggest knock is that he lacks ideal size and speed. At only 5-foot-11, he does not make up for the lack of height with extremely long arms. Receivers can get on him in a hurry. His speed is adequate, but as a shorter corner, it should be better. He will likely be a productive player at the next level. Teammates praise his work ethic and practice habits. If he can stay clean, after being flagged a ton in college, he has the makings of a solid starter. Nelson can sure up the opposite side of Peterson, and get the safety help that Peterson simply does not need.
