Charley Hoffman hits a hole in one at The Masters (Video)
By Kyle Walton
Sundays at Augusta National are known for their memory making shots and in 2018 Charley Hoffman etched his name into the history books.
Charley Hoffman started the 2018 Masters with a solid opening 3-under round of 69. Unfortunately his second and third rounds resulted in rounds of 73 that moved him to 1-over for the tournament. Hoffman began Sunday’s final round 13 shots off the lead but not willing to give up just yet.
Hoffman came out of the gate swinging with back-to-back birdies at the 2nd and 3rd holes. He added another birdie at 7 to go 3-under for the day on the front nine. While still not quite in contention the Californian continued to press on.
A slight step back at 11 left Hoffman with a narrowly missed par to claim the first bogey of his round. A bounce back birdie at the par-5 15th would set Hoffman up for the shot of his entire week. The par-3 16th has made plenty of history over the 82 years of The Masters and Hoffman would add his name to history book.
Previously this week Hoffman had gone par-par-bogey at Hole 16. This time around he stepped up 6-iron in hand and ready to correct his bogey from Saturday. With one significant swing of the club Hoffman’s ball landed just to the left of the hole and took the slope directly to the cup for a hole-in-one.
Hoffman threw up his hands and proceeded to hand out high fives to anyone in range. Ross Somerville hit the first hole in one at 16 in 1934. Since then 19 other competitors have replicated that feat including Hoffman this year and Matt Kuchar in 2017.
