3. The East Isn’t Good

The Eastern Conference has no overwhelming favorite this season. Sure, the Pittsburgh Penguins are probably the favorites to emerge from the dogfight. After all, they’ve won the past two Stanley Cups. But the Blue Jackets have a clear path to the Stanley Cup Finals.

First off, the Penguins have to be concerned about young goaltender Matt Murray. It’s been a harsh year for him, as he has dealt with a concussion and the loss of his father. The Penguins have been able to make up for his pedestrian regular season, but even considering Murray’s postseason success, he’s a huge question mark as the playoffs start.

The Washington Capitals, on paper, look great. But in reality, they’re relying on Alex Ovechkin, Evgeny Kuznetsov and excellent goaltending from Philip Grubauer. Will the young goalie (who has never been a starter for a full season) struggle in the playoffs? Can the Capitals exorcise their own postseason demons?

Much like the Penguins, both the Bruins and the Lightning have goaltenders who are entering the postseason on cold streaks. While both teams have excellent skaters, bad goaltending is a great way to ensure yourself of an early playoff exit.

The Philadelphia Flyers have what it takes to make it, but they love making things difficult for themselves, so it’s likely not happening. Meanwhile, the Toronto Maple Leafs have a questionable defense at best. They can probably score enough to offset it, but Frederik Andersen’s got to be outstanding for them to be Stanley Cup contenders.

Speaking of which…
