Triple Threat Match for the WWE Intercontinental Championship

The Miz (c) vs. Seth Rollins vs. Finn Balor

What we learned: I think what we learned here that Finn Balor didn’t think the Intercontinental Championship was important enough to put on the Demon gear. All kidding aside, this was a great opening match, and since Balor wasn’t going with anything overly special for this match, Seth Rollins had to pick up the slack with those ice blue contacts, which were awesome. Speaking of awesome, The Miz continues to impress and really has brought the Intercontinental Championship back to prominence. This had a big fight feel to it and was the perfect choice to kick things off.

This bout was a whirlwind from the get-go, and the crowd was really hot for this one. All three competitors worked a furious pace from the start and never really let up. Triple Threat matches are difficult to pull off sometimes, and there’s usually some down time and too much one-on-one action but this was done perfectly. Everyone got a chance to shine here, and the near-falls were excellent. Balor and Rollins have excellent chemistry together and really have built a nice rivalry. The tease of the Buckle Bomb on the outside, the exact same move that put Balor out of action at SummerSlam a couple of years ago, was a nice touch.

I can’t say enough about how impressed I continue to be with The Miz. After all of these years, he continues to be one of the best heels in the business, and he’s better in the ring than he’s ever been. That late Skull Crushing Finale was great, but in the end, it was Rollins picking up the win for his first Intercontinental Championship. Great match to start things off.

What’s next: I wouldn’t mind seeing this match again at Backlash, or perhaps even sooner than that. I don’t know if we’ll get another Triple Threat but I’ve greatly enjoyed watching these three go at it. The Miz obviously has a rematch coming to him, and Balor and Rollins have plenty of unfinished business. With a new baby at home, I could see The Miz taking a little time off, and he’s certainly earned that, so perhaps he goes for his rematch on RAW and loses, leaving Balor and Rollins to give us an instant classic at Backlash next month.
