Baker Mayfield: 5 best fits in 2018 NFL Draft
2. New York Giants
Sterling Shepard and Mayfield played together for a year at Oklahoma so that chemistry won’t be a problem. Not to mention, everything that Shepherd has done in the NFL matches what Mayfield can do best. It feels like Shepard runs more slant routes than any other wide receiver but that’s for good reason. He does it at a high level. His ability to run the slant route meshes so well with Mayfield’s ability to deliver the ball on time and on target.
It doesn’t hurt to have a talent like Odell Beckham Jr. to throw the ball to as well. He runs every route in the book well and can make the most of any quarterback. Having a safety blanket who has a chance anytime you throw the ball in his vicinity can take the pressure off of any quarterback, especially a rookie. Mayfield has the ability to hit Beckham coming over the middle or as he breaks it to the sideline, making his option routes all the more dangerous.
While the wide receiving talent the Giants have is impressive, I think Evan Engram will be the best help to Mayfield. Last year’s first round pick can do it all from the tight end position. Whether he has to sit down a route or run past a safety he can do it. I feel like most rookie quarterbacks rely on their tight ends more than most so having a good one helps.
There are a lot of questions about the Giants going into next year that hold them back. Biggest of all, we have no idea whether or not Beckham will be on the roster going into next season. After that, there is no clear vision of what the offense will look like under Pat Shurmur after some dysfunction with Ben McAdoo. Outside of that, the Giants are a great spot for Mayfield to go to.
