Shortstop, High End Spend

Carlos Correa, $4,400

.118/.211/.176 with 0 HR in 17 at-bats

Shortstop is somewhere that I tend to spend up on most nights because the lower-tier options sometimes have a lower floor/ceiling combo. Correa is awfully tempting tonight even though he has a poor BvP record. I’m choosing to not worry about that because Correa historically destroys lefty pitching. He makes hard contact 40 percent of the time through his career and that goes along with a .292 average, .882 OPS, .212 ISO and a .374 wOBA. All of those numbers are even better in his 10 plate appearances against lefties so far this year. It’s a big slate, but Correa is already hard to get away from.

Also Consider – Manny Machado, $4,500

Mid-Range

Corey Seager, $3,700

.545/.688/1.182 with 2 HR in 11 at-bats

If there’s one player that can knock me off of Correa at the shortstop position, it’s going to be Seager. He’s seen Grienke very well so far in their careers and Grienke didn’t look all that great the last time out. Seager has stated off very slowly and that might be why he’s only the ninth highest shortstop in salary. The young shortstop has excellent career numbers against righties, including a .311 batting average, a .894 OPS and a .379 wOBA. He should fly under the radar on a slate this size and given the fact he’s not even hitting .220 yet. If I need the savings from Correa, Seager is going to be in plenty of lineups.

Also Consider – Jean Segura, $3,500

Value

Jodry Mercer, $2,600

N/A

Mercer has always been underrated when the Bucs face any type of lefty. He doesn’t have a lot of upside as far as home runs or anything else but he’s likely to be a solid contributor. His career numbers against southpaws are a .292 batting average, .812 OPS and a .350 wOBA. It could also be a nice bonus if he hits in the two slot like he did the last time the Pirates faced a lefty. It also doesn’t hurt to be playing in one of the highest scoring offenses of the early going.

Also Consider – None unless someone pops up on the lineup cards.
