Joel Embiid returned to help the Philadelphia 76ers beat the Miami Heat in Game 3. Now, Embiid and the Sixers will look to go up 3-1 in the series with a win in Saturday’s Game 4.
After missing the end of the regular season and the first two games of the playoffs, Joel Embiid returned to the Philadelphia 76ers’ lineup for Game 3, complete with a state-of-the-art mask that featured built-in goggles. While Embiid struggled to start, he got stronger as the game went on in a 128-108 victory that has the Sixers up 2-1 in the series. With a win on Saturday, Philly would return home with a chance to advance.
Embiid finished Game 3 with 23 points, seven rebounds, four assists and three blocks. The big man even hit three of his four 3-point attempts, including a dagger in the fourth quarter. Embiid and the Sixers dominated the final frame, outscoring the Heat 32-14 to turn a competitive game into a blowout.
Fellow Processers Ben Simmons and Dario Saric also stood out for Philly. Simmons notched 19 points, 12 rebounds, seven assists and four steals on Thursday. For the series, the rookie is nearly averaging a triple-double with 20 points, 10 rebounds and 9.7 assists per game. Saric scored 21 points in Game 3 and is putting up 21.3 points per game in the series.
There’s another Sixer averaging over 20 points per game in the playoffs, and that’s veteran shooting guard Marco Belinelli. While Belinelli’s shot selection and defense can often leave a lot to be desired, he has provided a major spark off the bench with 20.7 points per game.
The Heat got a strong performance from Goran Dragic, who poured in 23 points on 8-of-13 shooting to go along with eight assists. However, Dragic didn’t score a point in the fourth quarter as Miami shot 26.3 percent.
Hassan Whiteside played two minutes in the fourth quarter and only 13 minutes for the game, and afterward he let his frustrations about his role be known. Whiteside played little in Games 1 and 2 because he was ineffective, and in Game 3 he didn’t play much because he was in foul trouble as he battled Embiid. Whiteside should have more value with Embiid back, but for at least one game that wasn’t the case.

The Sixers have clearly looked like the better team through three games. They’ve won two games in blowout fashion, and the one loss was thanks to a throwback Dwyane Wade game that he failed to replicate in Game 3 and likely won’t replicate again. Philly is the clear favorite, especially with Embiid back, but Miami is a scrappy, well-coached team that can’t be counted out.
