Catcher/First Base, High End Spend

Freddie Freeman, $4,500

.286/.333/.286 with 0 HR in 14 at-bats

Since 2011, Freeman has not finished with a wOBA under .363 against righty pitching. he now draws Homer Bailey, who’s allowing a fly ball to lefty batters 40 percent of the time so far this year. That’s not the stat you wantt o have attached to you in Great American Ballpark. Bailey just’t isn’t that good anymore and all his metrics point towards him getting blasted sooner or later. Freeman is one of the elite bats on this slate and is in the running for one of the better plays, period. Any of the power Yankee bats are appealing but they are so expensive. Freeman is a nice pivot off of New York today.

Mid-Range

Carlos Santana, $3,200

N/A

The Phillies draw righty Matt Koch today who actually didn’t look as bad as we all assumed in his last start. Santana has very poor stats on the face of things but he has been horribly unlucky so far this season. His BABIP is hovering around .150 which is frightfully low. His hard contact rate and fly ball rate are both spiked over his career normals which means positive regression is coming for Santana. Koch has always struggled to get lefty hitters out through his minor league career and Santana is no minor leaguer. That big game is right around the corner and it could come with the nice weather in Philly this afternoon.

Value

This will be a wait and see approach to the value portion. Seeing as how it’s a day game after a night game for these squads, it stands to reason we could get a backup catcher or a bench player at a cheap price point. If nobody really pops up, Santana could be the lowest I’d want to go at the position. I want to get his big game when he’s relatively low-owned, not jump back on him after the has a big game.
