Third Base, High End Spend

Jeimer Candelario, $3,700

.500/.667/.500 with 0 HR in 2 at-bats

There is quite the convergence of factors that appear to line up for the Detroit third baseman today. First off, the guy is red-hot. He’s hit double-digit FanDuel points in eight of his last 10 games. Secondly, he ranks 25th in MLB against the fastball in 2018. Pirates starter Ivan Nova throws his fastball about 70 percent of the time so far this season. Candelario was a prospect with some pedigree and it’s possible he’s starting to fulfill that promise just a little bit. Ivan Nova isn’t a scary matchup by any stretch and the Pirates bullpen is terrible right now.

Also Consider – Miguel Andujar, $3,700

Mid-Range

Miguel Sano, $3,600

.333/.333/1.333 with 1 HR in 3 at-bats

San actually took multiple walks and hit a home run last night and that’s bound to get my attention. When a streaky hitter like Sano is walking and hitting bombs, they tend to come in bunches. That’s just the nature of a streaky player. Sano typically mashes on lefty pitching, even though he hasn’t really been dialed in yet. Yankees starter Jordan Montgomery doesn’t have the easiest time with righty batters and Sano could be in line for another big day. I’m not sure if he’ll make the cut given the limited funds we’ll have to spend on offense. There’s always a chance Snao strikes out four times in a game. At worst, he’s a GPP option.

Value

Colin Moran, $2,700

.333/.333/.667 with 0 HR in 3 at-bats

The Tigers are starting Michael Fulmer today and we should be very interested in any Pirates lefty bat. Fulmer has been getting destroyed by them so far in 2018 — allowing a .327 average, a .979 OPS and a .420 wOBA. Moran hit a home run yesterday and even though he’s not going to have a prime batting spot, the price doesn’t demand that he needs one to succeed. Moran is in a great spot and he could potentially go under-owned, even on a short slate like this one.
