2. Courtland Sutton, WR, SMU

Some NFL analysts had SMU’s Courtland Sutton as the higher-ranked wideout on their boards over Maryland’s D.J. Moore, so the fact that he’s still available heading into Round 2 has to have some teams salivating.

Sutton is an interesting study for both NFL general managers and prospective fantasy owners. He has the desired size to be an X receiver, at six-foot-three and 218 pounds, and he’s proven that his hands are reliable. He was also a production machine over his last two seasons at SMU, with 68 receptions for 1,085 yards and 12 touchdowns in 2017, and more yards (1,246) but fewer scores (10) the year prior. A previous life as a safety and a basketball player belie Sutton’s ability to win the contested catch.

However, watching the film, Sutton could struggle slightly to gain separation at the NFL level, as he doesn’t have top-tier play speed. A lack of explosiveness at the first and second levels of the defense mean that he might not be a catch-and-run threat in the NFL. But Sutton’s real value for fantasy owners will come in PPR leagues, as he’s almost certain to be used as a possession receiver and as a red-zone threat, both of which will pay dividends no matter which NFL team calls his name tonight.
