It is, frankly, a shock that LSU running back Derrius Guice remains on the draft board heading into Round 2 while players such as San Diego State’s Rashaad Penny heard their names called in Round 1.

In all, three running backs were selected on Day 1 — the obvious one, Penn State’s Saquon Barkley, in addition to Penny and Georgia’s Sony Michel. Guice has to be bewildered that Seattle, if it was going to be in the market for a running back, reached for Penny over him, considering that most analysts had a late-second round or even early-third round grade on Penny.

So why was Guice left to uncomfortably wither in the green room as cameras caught his fall on national television? It might have something to do with the NFL’s investigation into how his Combine interviews went down. According to Guice, teams asked him about his sexual orientation and about whether his mom is a prostitute. But the NFL investigated and found no evidence to suggest anyone asked those kinds of questions during his interviews.

Regardless of what happened during Guice’s Combine interviews, teams seem to be shying away from him because he isn’t afraid to speak up about such things. Right or wrong, that’s the way of the league these days. But no one can doubt that Guice does all the right things on the field. In 2016, he led the SEC in rushing, with 1,387 yards, and in rushing touchdowns for running backs, with 15.

Guice dealt with some injury issues in 2017, but if he can remain healthy in the NFL, he’s going to be a feature running back for an NFL team and a future RB1 for fantasy owners.
