Second Base, High End Spend

Yoan Moncada, $4,100

.200/.273/.500 with 0 HR in 10 at-bats

It’s quickly becoming a habit in this season of DFS to check to see what handed pitcher Moncada is facing. If it’s a lefty I’ll pass for the day. It it’s righty like Ian Kennedy is today, I’m at least going to consider Moncada for this spot. He’s raking against right handed pitching so far, showing the promise that made him the talk of prospect circles since 2017. All the metrics suggest a legitimate breakout, with a hard hit rate and fly ball rate both over 52 percent. He’s smoking the ball when he makes contact and it’s backed up with his average (.297), OPS (1.055) and a wOBA that’s .455. It’s worth noting that Kennedy has fared well against lefty batters but I’m going to side with the young gun in this matchup.

Also Consider: Robinson Cano, $3,800

Mid-Range

Whit Merrifield, $3,300

.500/.500/.750 with 0 HR in 4 at-bats

It’s a great day for baseball because we can play one of the best names in the game, Whit Merrifield. I’ve always liked the first name, what can I say? I get excited when the Royals are facing a lefty because Merrifield is almost always reasonably priced and he smacks around lefties in his career. His batting average is over .310, the OPS is over .870 and the wOBA is right at .370. 2018 has been even kinder to Merrifield against south paws. The only two arguments against playing Merrifield is the offense around humbling poor and Sox starter Hector Santiago has been tough on righties this season. That’s not enough reason for me and Merrifield is in play today.

Also Consider: Matt Carpenter, $3,300

Value

So there’s really only two players that sort of standout for tomorrow, and they’re better served as a GPP option. The first is Eric Sogard at $2,000 because he’s bare minimum and would face a righty if he’s in the lineup. The other is Devon Travis ($2,400) because as we discussed earlier, Martin Perez is getting rocked by righties. We’ll see if these players are in the lineup and where they bat before we hit submit with them.
