Third Base, High End Spend

Kris Bryant, $4,400

.433/.469/.767 with 2 HR in 15 at-bats

First, it was great to see Bryant back in the lineup for yesterday’s game against the Brewers. He’d been missing since taking a pitch to the head earlier in the week at Colorado. What appeared very scary turned out to not be a major injury, thank goodness. Bryant is in the middle of a great season and he’s crushed Davies when he’s seen him. The Brewers pitcher is giving up an insanely high hard contact rate to righty hitters at a 55.3 rate and his fly balls are up at 33.3 percent. That’s not how you want to pitch to Bryant, who has an OPS over .900 and a wOBA over .395 this year against righties.

Also Consider: Jose Ramirez, $4,200

Mid-Range

Kyle Seager, $3,600

.429/.429/.786 with 0 HR in 14 at-bats

I’ll start off by saying that I’ve hated playing Seager so far in 2018. He’s one of the players you just feel like you never get right. You play him, he gets you a single. You leave him off the roster and he hits a home run. The entire Mariners offense is attractive today and Seager especially is in an incredible spot. Indians starter Josh Tomlin has been positively mauled by lefty batters in five total innings in 2018, giving up five homers with a .448 average, a 1.549 OPS (not a typo), a .635 wOBA and a 56 percent hard contact rate in conjunction with a 44 percent fly ball rate. On paper, Tomlin is going to get wrecked by this Seattle team. Seager is awfully hard to not play at $3,600.

Also Consider: Yangervis Solarte, $3,200

Value

Danny Valencia, $2,400

.667/.800/.667 with 0 HR in 3 at-bats

There’s only one time we ever look to play Danny Valencia and that’s when he gets to face a mediocre lefty. That’s the situation at hand today as he faces Tigers starter Daniel Norris, who Valencia should be able to take advantage of. It’s a little bit weird for the Orioles third baseman as his average against lefties isn’t good this year. Even with that in mind, the OPS, ISO and the wOBA are all elevated to the point that catches your eye. Norris is giving up a .340 wOBA and a significant hard hit rate. Valencia is a great way to save some money on this slate.
