Outfielder, High End Spend

Kyle Schwarber, $4,100

.214/.313/.643 with 2 HR in 14 at-bats

I’m an admitted Schwarber fanboy, but he’s really shown some serious growth at the plate against righties this season. His strikeout rate is the lowest it’s ever been and Brewers starter Zach Davies isn’t a strikeout pitcher. His average is as high as it’s ever been up at .339, his OPS is 1.189, his ISO is .411 and the wOBA is .494. All of these represent huge improvements and Schwarber deserves a lot of credit for coming into the 2018 campaign in great shape, ready to play well. It’s showing early in the season and he’s a great play against righties who don’t strike anyone out.

Also Consider: A.J. Pollock, $4,100 and Mitch Haniger, $3,900

Mid-Range

Dee Gordon, $3,400

N/A

Flat out, I think Josh Tomlin is a bad pitcher. All he does is give up home runs and while I think Nelson Cruz ($3,600) is also very worthy of this spot, Gordon interests me just a hair more. For one, he’s a lefty and that’s where Tomlin has been getting crushed more than anything else. Even though righties are hitting him well too, lefties have better metrics by a significant margin. Is Gordon going to hit you a home run? Likely not but he’s got a great chance to get on, steal a base and score a run. Gordon is slightly safer to my eye than Cruz, although I wouldn’t talk you out of either. Just make sure to take a swing at Tomlin with a Seattle bat or two.

Also Consider: Adam Jones, $3,400 and Odubel Herrera, $3,200

Value

Ben Zobrist, $2,000

.091/.231/.091 with 0 HR in 11 at-bats

I’m not sure why Zobrist is still the bare minimum price after coming off the disabled list and he’s bound to popular, especially if he’s batting higher in the lineup. My general thoughts on plays like this is if you think a super cheap play is going to be the chalk, just eat it and figure out another spot to be a little different. Davies is nothing special and can definitely be had by a contact hitter like Zobrist. It might be a little frustrating if he’s highly owned but he’s too cheap to turn away from, especially if you’re pitching a high end option.

Also Consider: Ben Gamel, $2,300 and Lourders Gurriel, Jr., $2,200
