Early Slate – White Sox at Cardinals

White Sox Probable Starter – Lucas Giolito, RHP

7.71 ERA, 1.71 WHIP 3.86 K/9

Vs LHH – .250 average, .379 wOBA  36.6 hard contact rate

Vs RHH – .220 average, .337 wOBA  21.7 hard contact rate

Giolito is such a weird pitcher. There’s a lot of metrics that point to him being a reasonably solid pitcher. Not great, mind you. He still shouldn’t be this bad considering his BABIP is fine, the hard contact rates aren’t egregious. The biggest issue that Giolito has is the walk rate. He’s walking almost a batter for every inning which is just awful. This is a terrible matchup for the young pitcher from the White Sox because the Cardinals have plenty of patient hitters and then the power to make him pay. Giolito is unplayable and there’s plenty of Cardinals bats that are appealing.

Cardinals Hitters to Target

Elite Options – Matt Carpenter, Tommy Pham

Secondary Options – Dexter Fowler, Paul DeJong, Yadier Molina

Cardinals Probable Starter – Carlos Martinez, RHP

1.43 ERA, 1.06 WHIP 9.56 K/9

Vs LHH – .162 average, .250 wOBA  32.0 hard contact rate

Vs RHH – .186 average, .286 wOBA  37.2 hard contact rate

I’ll be honest, I can never get Carlos Martinez right. When I play him, he’s very mediocre and doesn’t strike anyone out. When I pass on him, he throws a gem while striking out at least eight. Despite having a good matchup against the White Sox at home, I don’t think I’ll play Martinez today. He is significantly cheaper than Kluber but Snell is more appealing at a cheaper price. In six starts this year, Martinez has had seven or more strikeout three times and five or fewer three times. That’s a little too inconsistent for me to pay almost five figures. The White Sox do have a righty heavy lineup so this does have potential to be a good game for Martinez. His walk rate could also get him into trouble as it’s way too high right now.
