Tigers at Royals

Tigers Probable Starter – Mike Fiers, RHP

3.91 ERA, 1.26 WHIP and 5.87 K/9

Vs LHH – .250 average, .337 wOBA and 26.5 hard contact rate

Vs RHH – .278 average, .317 wOBA and 37.8 hard contact rate

Fiers is an interesting pitcher. He’s virtually unplayable due to his low strikeout total but he’s not been a pitcher you can stack up the entire opposing offense with much success. In four starts, he’s only given up more than three earned runs once. He was worse last year and that could have been because his HR/FB ratio was up near 20 percent. He’s kept that under control so far this season but you would think it will go sideways at some point. Fiers is a mediocre pitcher and the Royals have a couple of bats that are the best way to attack him. His splits are pretty close together for his career.

Royals Hitters to Target

Elite Options – Mike Moustakas, Lucas Duda, Jorge Soler

Secondary Options – Jon Jay, Whit Merrifield

Royals Probable Starter – Eric Skoglund, LHP

6.23 ERA, 1.20 WHIP and 7.89 K/9

Vs LHH – .167 average, .338 wOBA and 40.0 hard contact rate

Vs RHH – .257 average, .331 wOBA and 50.9 hard contact rate

Skoglund might actually be lucky his ERA is so low considering his hard contact rate and the fact he’s giving up fly balls at a 45.3 clip to righties. That’s where we’ll be looking at today and hopefully Miguel Cabrera is back in the lineup. Even if he’s not, the focus just needs to be on the righties for the Tigers. Even with the game being in Kansas City wouldn’t deter me. It’s a big ball park that usually helps the pitchers out. I’m not sure there’s a park big enough to give Skoglund the help he needs.
