The NHL got roasted after using a photo featuring a Tom Wilson jersey on Instagram.

People online enjoy getting mad over trivial things. Frankly, it’s a social media tradition to roast people over their dumb decisions. On Thursday, May 3, the NHL found this out the hard way. Some poor social media employee scheduled a post on Instagram — a picture featuring a fan wearing a Tom Wilson Washington Capitals jersey. What could possibly go wrong?

Late on Wednesday night, Wilson got suspended for three games for his reckless hit on Pittsburgh Penguins forward Zach Anton-Reese. Even before the suspension, the Capitals forward was among the most penalized players in the league thanks to his physical play and is among the NHL’s most efficient pests.

And in case the NHL decides to take down the post, here’s a screenshot.

To top everything off, it’s clearly a knockoff jersey. Why would the NHL use a cheap jersey in a picture? Though reading the comments is never a good idea, don’t worry, I’ve done it for you. Let’s take a look at some of the family-friendly highlights from the comment section.

“Don’t let this distract you from the fact Wilson is suspended 3 games.” “How can you post this after he gets suspended 3 games?” “Is this an actual photo of Wilson watching the rest of round two from the stands?” “imagine being stupid enough to buy a bootleg wilson sweater.” “Raise your hands if you’re wearing a knockoff jersey of the dirtiest player in the league.”

Let’s be fair to that social media employee, though. The NHL used the same photo several weeks earlier. So it’s obvious they scheduled the post ahead of time.

But, yeesh, talk about awful timing. There are far better pictures to use than that one. Even if you want a Capitals jersey in the picture, just go up to any other fan. Chances are, they’re not wearing a knockoff Wilson jersey.
