2018 NBA Mock Draft: Knicks go big with Mo Bamba
If Porter reaches his potential, he and rookie Dennis Smith Jr. could form one of the more potent offensive tandems in the league. The combination of athleticism and shooting would provide many possibilities for the Mavericks as they rebuild their team.
Porter wasn’t able to flash his versatility on offense this season because of injury, but at his best, he is a deadly shooter and slinky finisher. He carries a skill set that could allow him to play three positions on offense in the NBA, and take a load off Smith as he adjusts to his first full season. Veteran wing Wesley Mathews just opted into the final year of his contract, and it appears Dirk Nowitzki will be back for another year as well. That combination of playing time and roster insulation would be helpful for the development of Porter and Smith.
Finally, Harrison Barnes’ development as a pick-and-roll ball-handler and isolation scorer would be the most helpful way that Dallas’ current roster would support the two young scorers. Barnes finished 10 percent of his possessions as a PnR handler this year, up from 4 percent last season. In addition, he became more involved taking the ball up the court in transition.
With Barnes shouldering a heavy scoring load and Mathews and Nowitzki spacing the floor, Porter and Smith could be in a great position to succeed.
