Here’s what the superfecta — one of the most lucrative and tricky bets you can make at a horse race — paid out at the 2018 Kentucky Oaks.

To win a superfecta bet, the bettor in question must correctly identify the top 4 finishers in the correct order. It’s one of the most difficult bets to make as even the least surprising race is likely to have one or two horses jostle in position. At the 2018 Kentucky Oaks, bettors that picked a correct top 4 — in this case, Monomoy Girl-Wonder Gadot-Midnight Bisou-Eskimo Kisses — won $1,387.

The 2018 Oaks presented a particularly challenging lineup for superfecta bettors. While Monomoy Girl and Midnight Bisou were favorites, the 1-2 finish was up for the debate. As for picking the third and fourth place finishes, the nearly the whole rest of the field shared 15-1 and 12-1 odds.

The weather also made things interesting. With thunderstorms forecast for the early evening, the fillies were expected to run the Oaks on a sloppy and muddy track. With contenders who had never run on an off-track before, a correct top four was an ambitious bet to make. But that’s why it’s called a gamble.

Still, the rain never came and two favorites made the metaphorical podium, so not even Wonder Gadot’s 20-1 odds resulted in too much of coup this year.

Off a $1 dollar bet, superfecta bettors at the 2018 Kentucky Oaks made $1,387. Trifecta winners (top three, correct order) and exacta winners (top two, correct order) made $181.20 on a $1 bet and $96.80 on a $2 bet.

Last year, the winning Kentucky Oaks superfecta of Abel Tasman, Daddy’s Lil Darling, Lockdown and Vexatious earned a $85,555.10 payout on a $1 dollar bet. This year, things went slightly more according to plan, and that was reflected in the lower payout.
