Philadelphia Phillies: Rhys Hoskins

The Phillies have a deep collection of young talent that could be in this spot, but Hoskins fits the bill not only because of his impactful initial play in the major leagues, but due to his impressive athleticism for a man his size, which should allow him to continue his incredible production for a long time.

Hoskins has just played 81 major league games as of Friday, May 4th, and he has already put up a .268/.409/.570 line with 22 home runs, 5 stolen bases, and drawn an incredible 62 walks to 81 strikeouts over 342 plate appearances, which equates to an 18% walk rate and a 23.7% strikeout rate. Essentially in half a season in the majors, he’s put up a 44 home run, 10 stolen base pace.

The biggest question on Hoskins being able to put together a career worthy of the MLB Hall of Fame right now (outside of the usual injury one, of course) is his age. Hoskins did not make his debut in the major leagues until he was 24 years old, and he is in the midst of his first full season in the major leagues, already posting a .431 OBP to rank among the league leaders.

Hoskins has been playing left field due to the Phillies signing Carlos Santana, but he is going to shift to first base at some point in his career, though he is certainly athletic enough to play outfield at a quality level for a few seasons.

If “Big Hosk” can continue down the path he’s started, he will join 11 other Phillies to wear the team’s cap in the MLB Hall of Fame.
