1. Get close with Porzingis

It’s no secret that David Fizdale had a hard time getting along with Marc Gasol in Memphis. That’s one of the big reasons he’s no longer with the Grizzlies. He can’t afford to let the same thing happen with Kristaps Porzingis.

Porzingis is the only player on this roster with superstar potential. He was the Knicks best player before his injury last season and, assuming he recovers fully, will be again this year. Fizdale needs to forge a close relationship with his big man even while he’s sitting out due to injury.

Fizdale needs completely buy-in from Porzingis if he’s going to make his time with the Knicks a success. Fortunately, his role on the team should make it easy for him to be satisfied.

When he returns from injury, Fizdale should, and will, make him the focal point of the Knicks offense. In an ideal world, that will be at the center position. Porzingis is a matchup nightmare for opposing centers due to his perimeter shooting ability.

No matter what, Porzingis needs to feel like Fizdale is a coach he can trust. If that bond is forged, the Knicks have a chance to succeed in the future. If the relationship falters, it will end badly for the Knicks and David Fizdale.
