5 reasons Browns fans should be excited for the 2018 season
4. Quarterback help finally arriving
Some might not agree on Mayfield being the right answer at quarterback, but everyone can agree that the quarterback situation in Cleveland is significantly better than it has been in past years.
The signal-calling carousal of players like DeShone Kizer, Kevin Hogan, Cody Kessler, Josh McCown, Johnny Manziel, Austin Davis and Robert Griffin III has been an ongoing nightmare for the Browns.
There have been enough starting quarterbacks over the last four seasons for the Browns to suit up an entire football team. It’s an ever-revolving door that hasn’t remained shut since Bernie Kosar joined the team in 1985.
Perhaps that’ll change once Mayfield steps onto the field.
The Heisman Trophy winner out of the University of Oklahoma is a cerebral presence in the pocket with the ability to make all of the right reads and deliver accurate passes in tight spaces. He’s a proven leader on the field, which is something the Browns have clearly lacked over the years.
Dorsey has also implemented an emergency eject button just in case the whole Mayfield experiment doesn’t work out. Tyrod Taylor, the former starting quarterback for the Buffalo Bills, is more than capable of stepping in if the young signal-caller isn’t ready for the pressure of the NFL.
It was only a couple years ago that Taylor signed a six-year extension with the Bills worth upwards of $92 million. That deal never panned out, and the Bills opted to release the veteran quarterback and move on with rookie Josh Allen and Nate Peterman behind center.
Signing Taylor could end up being one of the best moves of the season for the Browns, particularly if he starts this season. He may not be the long-term answer for any team in the NFL, but he is a luxury option all teams would love to have on their roster as a potential backup.
