29. Hector Herrera, midfielder, Mexico

Like Fernandes, Hector Herrera is a midfielder who may have escaped many people’s attention. Even so, the 28-year-old has all the attributes to be the maestro in the middle for El Tri.

Herrera helped himself to five goals and as many assists with Porto this season. He can dictate games from deep, offer inspiration in the final third and is even tenacious enough to break up play.

Having an all-rounder like Herrera in the engine room is a huge boost for Mexico. The squad is already loaded with quality up top, including former Arsenal man Carlos Vela and West Ham striker Javier Hernandez.

Herrera’s partnership with Andres Guardado, a skilled destroyer for Real Betis, will ensure the supply lines to Vela and Co. stay open. If Herrera turns on the style, a Mexico squad paired with holders Germany in Group F can go further than many expect.
