Winnipeg Jets: Mike Green, Defenseman
Finally, we come down to the Winnipeg Jets. They have a lot of restricted agents to decide on and $26 million with which to use. That includes Vezina candidate Connor Hellebuyck, so money is going to be tight.
The Jets are explosive on offense and might need to replace Paul Stastny if he leaves. But we want them to keep building the defense, anyway. We have yet to slot defenseman Mike Green into this article, and there’s a reason why. He’s pretty expensive at $6 million a season and he’s going to be coming off of spinal surgery. The risk is there in that no one knows the extent to which he’ll play come next season. His recovery is expected to take about two months.
If he goes for less money, which he might considering the injury, he could be a good addition to a Jets team that might lose Toby Enstrom and is fairly young beyond that. Green made the All-Star team for the Detroit Red Wings. He can still give a team 35 to 40 points a season. The only major concern will be the injuries. But with Dustin Byfuglien manning a top role, Green could help this club that still gave up the 19th most shots against per game. There aren’t a ton of areas Winnipeg need help in. Also, it’s still battling in the Western Conference Final with Vegas, but defense is certainly a spot to look at. If Stastny goes, the center position will need another looking into also.
