Kansas City Chiefs: What can we really expect from Patrick Mahomes?

The Kansas City Chiefs have been the best team in the AFC West for quite some time now, after winning the division the last two seasons. The constant for this team has been the starting quarterback, as Alex Smith has proven he can certainly win his fair share of regular season games.

However, after another disappointing show in the playoffs, the team decided it was time to turn the page at the position. During the 2017 NFL Draft, the Chiefs moved up in the first round to select Patrick Mahomes II out of Texas Tech, and it will be his show for the foreseeable future.

Anytime you make a move to a young quarterback, there are certainly going to be some bumps along the way. However, when talking to Chiefs fans, they feel the team is not going to skip a beat with Mahomes at quarterback, even though Smith has been so good since joining the organization.

Smith knew his time was coming to an end, and he found a solid landing place in Washington. The team gave Mahomes the key to a very expensive car, as they have the talent on both sides of the ball to be a playoff team once again in 2018.

There is no bigger question than if they made the move to Mahomes too soon, and only time will tell that. Smith left some big shoes to fill, but Mahomes has the physical gifts to be an elite signal-caller in this league, but year one might be a struggle, especially against good defenses.
