Los Angeles Chargers: Is the defense good enough to win the AFC West?

This past season, the Chargers moved from San Diego to Los Angeles, as they looked to change their recent fortunes. The Chargers have a history of underachieving, despite having a talented roster, and it looked like the change of scenery was going to do nothing to change that tradition.

The Chargers started out 0-4 under first-year head coach Anthony Lynn, and many were already calling for his job just a quarter through the season. However, Lynn and the rest of the Chargers righted the ship, and nearly made it all the way to the playoffs.

Had they pulled off that feat, they would become only the second team in history to start the year with an 0-4 record and make the playoffs, matching the 1992 San Diego Chargers. They fell short of that goal, but they proved to the NFL that they had the talent to make a run in 2018, but will they be good enough.

A lot of the experts have the Chargers winning the AFC West, and that is a very reasonable prediction. They have an ageless quarterback in Philip Rivers, some incredible weapons in the passing game, and their running back, Melvin Gordon, is a budding star. The only question that remains is if the defense is ready to take the next step.

We see what the Chargers have on paper, as the combination of Joey Bosa and Melvin Ingram are arguably the best pass-rush tandem in the division. If the secondary can take another step forward in 2018, they could win the division, but that is a big if.
