San Francisco 49ers: Is Jimmy Garoppolo the real deal?
During the 2017 NFL season, the San Francisco 49ers were proving that they were one of the worst teams in the NFL. Then, at the trade deadline, new general manager John Lynch struck gold, trading for New England Patriots backup quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo.
The Jimmy G Era in San Francisco got off slow, as he was forced to watch C.J. Beathard try to move the ball downfield. Once he was inserted into the lineup, he quickly showed why he was such a prized commodity, leading the 49ers down the field for a late touchdown against the Seattle Seahawks.
Garoppolo would make his first start for the 49ers the following week, taking over for a team that had gone 1-10 through their first 11 games. He proceeded to win every game the rest of the season, incredibly turning this 1-10 group into a 6-10 team, and suddenly a place players wanted to play.
This offseason, the 49ers have done a nice job adding pieces around Garoppolo, whom they signed to the richest contract in NFL history. Now, all he has to do is prove he can stay healthy, and productive for a full 16-game season, something he has not had the opportunity to do during his NFL career.
The 49ers are a sexy pick to win the NFC West this season, as some believe they will come out and shock the world, much like the Los Angeles Rams did last season. Those same Rams bolstered their lineup big time this offseason, and the Seattle Seahawks are always solid, but if Jimmy G is the real deal, watch out.
