2018 NBA Mock Draft: What’s in store for the second round?
At the combine this week, NBA prospects, some of the best athletes in the world, participated in training drills in addition to the measurements. One of the biggest surprises, if NBA data is to be trusted (they swapped the weight of Wendell Carter and Jevon Carter), is Porter’s shuttle run time.
The shuttle run, which is like a miniature “suicide” sprint, involves athletes running between two sets of small pylons, picking up one at a time and running it over to the other side. It’s leaderboards typically feature the quickest and most explosive players in the draft, guys who can change direction quickly and have tremendous burst. Porter is not the type of player you would typically expect to do well.
However, the freshman, one of the youngest players in the draft, ran from one side to the other in 3.06 seconds, the fifth-fastest time of the day. His time was behind only Kevin Huerter, Melvin Frazier, Grayson Allen and Josh Okogie, all wings. Porter is a center, and not a particularly chiseled guy in the first place at this point in his development. Somehow, his quickness was off the charts, something that will surely help him in the eyes of talent evaluators.
Here are notable names that Porter finished above: Melvin Frazier, Trevon Duvall, Zhaire Smith and Jacob Evans.
As the Wizards try to reimagine themselves as a more versatile and balanced team, installing a center like Porter would make that infinitely easier.
