1. The Stanley Cup gets stolen again (kind of)

In the 1987 Stanley Cup Final, the Edmonton Oilers needed a little help and a little more superstition to finish off their series against the Philadelphia Flyers.

The Flyers had won both Games 5 and 6 after placing the Cup itself in a case in the Flyers dressing room for good luck. The Flyers fed off of the Cup’s presence and took both Games before a circus in Edmonton gave the players three days off before Game 7.

Prior to Game 7, an equipment manager informed Oilers coach Glen Sather that the Cup was once again in the Flyers dressing room for good luck. Glen snuck in and took the Cup out of the Flyers room and placed it in the Oilers room.

Sather then told the NHL security officials who were in charge of the Cup that the Cup must have been shipped with the circus in a classic mix-up of boxes. There was a panic until the game started and Sather had one of his equipment managers inform the officials of the actual location of the Cup.

The Oilers went on to win the game, perhaps because they were a better team, or perhaps because they pulled off the wildest pre-game prank on a Flyers team that put a little too much value in superstition.
