19. Patrick Roy’s pool party

In a very similar story to the one above, Patrick Roy also sunk the Cup to the bottom of his pool after one of his four Stanley Cup wins. Roy won two Cups with the Montreal Canadiens over 11 seasons and two with the Colorado Avalanche in eight attempts.

It’s safe to say Patrick Roy earned his parties with the Cup. He holds the goaltending records for most playoff games played (247) and playoff wins (151). Roy is a Hall of Fame goaltender who has his jersey retired in both Montreal and Colorado.

Perhaps the best story to come out of Roy’s career was his beef with Jeremy Roenick, who played for the Chicago Blackhawks at the time.

Roenick was taken down on a breakaway that probably should have resulted in a penalty shot. Roy claimed that he would have stopped the shot anyway, to which Roenick referenced a goal he scored on Roy in the previous game. Roy’s response went down as one of the best in hockey interview history.

Of course, all of this occurred at a time before the internet made things viral and media members created beefs that weren’t there. Unlike some players today, the guys back then could both take and dish a good ribbing (I see you, everyone in the NBA). Roenick has since joked about the incident, including on his Twitter feed:

We’ve taken a bit of a hard right from pool parties but how much more is there to cover on that. The Cup sinks.
