A couple who survived the Vegas shooting named their daughter after Reilly Smith
A couple who survived the Vegas concert shooting in October had a baby girl this month. They named her after Vegas Golden Knights forward Reilly Smith.
Just two weeks after the horrible Las Vegas shooting in October, a couple who survived the incident found out they were going to have a baby. Though they had originally wanted to name her “Austin,” they decided to go with “Riley” after their favorite Golden Knights player, Reilly Smith.
According to the Associated Press, Lauren and Brad Sugars say that the Knights’ success gave them something positive to focus on after the tragic event. Since the shooting, the people of Vegas have adopted and thrived under the #VegasStrong mentality. It is now something that is tied to the city and the Golden Knights team as a positive slogan, showing resilience and strength.
Little Riley Sugars might be good luck, as well. On May 18, the day she was born, Reilly Smith had himself a game. He had an assist and the game winning goal to defeat the Winnipeg Jets 3-2 in Game 4 of their series.
This is but one of many great stories surrounding the Golden Knights organization. The Knights being in the Stanley Cup final is a good enough story on its own, but it’s the stories like this that make us all feel a little bit prouder to be hockey fans.
There’s no upside to a senseless shooting taking the lives of 58 people, but as an outcome of this the world has gotten to know the resilience, strength, determination and positive attitude that Vegas has to offer. That is nothing short of incredible.
Oh. And we think Riley is pretty incredible as well. Perhaps she can get her hands on one of these onesies that the Knights’ mascot, Chance, was handing out the other day.
