Toronto Maple Leafs: Mike Myers

Mike Myers is a world-famous actor and comedian known for starring in movies such as Wayne’s World, Austin Powers, and Shrek. He’s been entertaining audiences pretty much since he was a child in the early 1970s. But something he’s been doing for just as long, if not longer, is supporting his favorite NHL team, the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Myers was born in 1963 in Scarborough, a suburb of Toronto, and spent his childhood growing up in the Toronto area. As a kid growing up in Canada, it’s only natural that he became a humongous hockey fan. His hometown Maple Leafs won the Stanley Cup the year he was born. They won the Cup again the year after in 1964, and then they won it again in 1967 when Myers was four years old.

Ever since then, Myers and his Leafs have had a pretty tough go of it. The Maple Leafs are one of the NHL premier franchises, one of the Original Six teams along with the Canadiens, Bruins, Rangers, Red Wings and Blackhawks. The team has won 13 Stanley Cups in its franchise history, which is second all-time behind Montreal’s 24.

But ever since winning that last Cup in 1967, the Maple Leafs have not made it back to the Final. It’s been 51 years of endless playoff disappointment. The most recent letdown came in this year’s playoffs, when the Maple Leafs were eliminated in the opening round of the playoffs in seven games by the Boston Bruins.

But even with the title drought, that hasn’t made Myers any less of a fan. He even named two characters from Austin Powers after Maple Leafs players.
